Eggshells-inspired aluminum material offers significant protection from space debris

There are nearly 1 million pieces of debris larger than 1 centimeter (0.4 inch) in near-Earth orbit. As we continue launching spacecraft and telescopes to explore the universe, this debris poses a significant threat of high-speed impact damage. In the Journal of Applied Physics researchers from Dalian University of Technology in China explored an eggshell-inspired design as a potential spacecraft protection material.

A new game demonstrates quantum advantage with provable classical limits

For decades, physicists have worked to prove the strange predictions of quantum mechanics with real experiments. As quantum computers have grown more powerful, researchers have devised increasingly sophisticated ways to test whether these machines are truly harnessing quantum effectsβ€”but every method so far has run into limits.

Marine heat waves boost coastal COβ‚‚ uptake by 11%, analysis finds

Marine heat waves are a consequence of climate change and are increasingly altering marine and coastal regions worldwide. An international study led by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon now shows that many coastal seas absorb more COβ‚‚ from the atmosphere during these extreme events than under normal conditions. The effect is particularly pronounced in polar and subpolar shelf seas of the Northern Hemisphere, where sea ice is declining as temperatures rise.

NASA’s Hubble, Webb Find Far-out Solar System Objects β€˜Remember’ Past

For the first time, scientists used the joint power of NASA’s Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes to study some of the most far-flung bodies in our solar system, Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs). Some of these are the smallest and faintest ever directly seen. The researchers unexpectedly found fewer small TNOs than they expected, and that […]
